Important Pointers

Procedures for Applying Eye Drops

Proper application of eye drops helps ensure effective medication delivery while minimizing the risk of contamination.

  1. Wash your hands: Thoroughly wash and dry your hands before applying the eye drops.
  2. Prepare the bottle: If instructed on the label, gently shake or roll the bottle to mix its contents.
  3. Remove the cap: Take off the bottle cap and hold the bottle securely between your fingers.
  4. Tilt your head: Tilt your head slightly backward and look upward. You may also lie down if that makes application easier.
  5. Create a pouch: Using the index finger of your free hand, gently pull down your lower eyelid to form a small pouch.
  6. Apply the drop: Squeeze the bottle gently to place one drop into the pouch. Ensure that the bottle tip does not touch your eye, eyelid, eyelashes, or any other surface.
  7. Close your eye gently: Release your lower eyelid and close your eye gently without squeezing it tightly.
  8. Wipe away excess medication: Use a clean tissue to wipe away any excess drops from your cheeks. Avoid rubbing or dabbing the eye itself.
  9. Replace the cap: Close the bottle securely and store it in accordance with the instructions on the label.

Application of Eye Ointment

Eye ointments should be applied according to your ophthalmologist’s instructions. Patients should follow the prescribed dosage, application method, and storage recommendations.
