Retina Surgeon
Dr Gopal S Pillai did his graduation from Thrissur Medical College and further post-graduation from AIMS New Delhi, in 2000. He is a Diplomate of the National Board of Examinations in 2001 and was admitted as a fellow of FICO in 2002 and FRCS in 2003. His fellowship was done at McMaster University Hamilton in 2009 and American Academy certificate course on AMD in 2011. He is a member of the National Diabetic Macular Edema Task Group and a Member of the National Optometry Curriculum Development Task Force. He reviews two journals, the Journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Journal of Tropical Medicine. He was the editor of the Kerala Journal of Ophthalmology. There are 30 international presentations, 300 national presentations, 8 international publications, and 4 book chapters under his name.
He is a pioneer of 25-gauge suture-less retinal surgery in India. Currently, he is the Professor and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology and Chief of Vitreo-Retinal Services at Amritha Institute of Medical Science and Research Centre, Cochin. Dr Gopal is one of the eminent vitreoretinal surgeons in South India.
